How Would NetBeans fair if IBM Bought Sun?
Based on this article, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29752352/, it seems IBM has entered talks to buy Sun. These deals fall through all the time, but IF the deal goes through I wonder what the fate would be for NetBeans since IBM was the original creator of Eclipse. I doubt they would want to promote a product that competes heavily with their original platform investment (Eclipse). Hopefully this deal tanks.

I’m afraid IBM would kill NetBeans and the prey upon what they think worth from it. That would be a shame as I find Eclipse too complex (both for using and extending via plugins).
IBM was not Eclipse’s creator (as much as Sun wasn’t NetBeans), but a Canadian company they bought as described in this article.
Sun’s shares went up after the news, so I’m afraid this Sun will be Eclipsed by the blue giant.
I hope I’m wrong.

I guess I should have said ‘main promoter/facilitator’ versus ‘creator’.

IBM was NOT Eclipse’s creator? So …who else was it? Even Wikipedia says it was IBM.

Ouch, just ignore my comment, I somehow must have ignored your link while reading. Sorry.

Also, I have to say I’m glad I decided to go to JavaOne in San Fran this year. Could very well be the last one. IBM may very well continue the conference, but it wouldn’t be the same.
